SHINee (샤이니)

SHINee (샤이니) is a popular K-Pop boy group debuted in 2008. Even before their debut, the label company, SM Entertainment, introduced an upcoming contemporary R&B boy group with its goal to be "trendsetters in all areas of music, fashion and dance." The name "Shinee" is a new coined word and explained as a combination of shine (meaning light), and the suffix -ee, therefore meaning "one who receives the light." Through their 9 years of journey in K-Pop music, they never failed to make the Shawols proud with their passionate performances.

  • Shinee is known as one of the best live vocalists and dancers in K-Pop.
  • They were awarded the Best Dance Performance Award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards three times in a row for their dance performances to "Sherlock", "Dream Girl" and "View".
  • The boys gained attention for starting a cool fashion trend, an attractive "boyish charm" which inspires students, known as "Shinee Trend."
  • Their hit song, "Ring Ding Dong" charted on top of several Korean music charts and gained popularity all over Asia.
  • "Lucifer" was nominated for the Best Dance Performance Award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in 2010 for its outstanding choreography.
  • Their Japanese version of their single "Replay" sold over 100,000 copies, the highest number of sales for a Japanese debut single recorded by Oricon for a South Korean group at the time.
  • On August 9, 2011, Shinee and their label mates f(x) and Girls' Generation, took part in an effort to help African children.

South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea (ROK) (Hangul: 대한민국, Hanja: 大韓民國, IPA) often referred to as Korea and the "Land of the Morning Calm", is a semi-presidential republic in East Asia, located in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula. Its capital is Seoul.

Korea is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, first inhabited as early as the Lower Paleolithic. After the Gojoseon period, Three Korean Kingdoms period ran from 57 BC until Silla's triumph over Goguryeo in 668, which marked the beginning of the North and South States period of Unified Silla in the South and Balhae in the North. Following the unification of North and South States period under Goryeo 936 AD. Korea went through the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty as one nation until the end of the Korean Empire in 1910. After liberation and division, South Korea was established in 1948 and has since become one of the two full democracies in Asia. Following the Korean War, the South Korean economy grew significantly, transforming the country into a major global economy. South Korea's economic growth is known as the Miracle on the Han River, and South Korea today is considered one of the Four Asian Tigers. South Korea has an international outlook with memberships in the United Nations, WTO, OECD and G-20 major economies. It is also a founding member of APEC and the East Asia Summit, being a major non-NATO ally of the United States.

South Korea is a developed country. It has the fourth-largest economy in Asia and a High-income OECD member, classified as an Advanced economy by the CIA and IMF. Today, it is among the world's fastest growing advanced economies and is leading the Next Eleven nations; its economic success serves as a role model for many developing countries. South Korea has a high-tech and futuristic infrastructure, and is a world leader in technologically advanced goods such as electronics, automobiles, ships, machinery, petrochemicals and robotics, headed by Samsung, POSCO, and Hyundai Heavy Industries. Since the 21st century, South Korea's modern culture has become popular in Asia and beyond in a phenomenon known as the Korean wave.
